Sheltering Arms Celebrates Patients and Therapists with Multiple Events During National Rehabilitation Awareness WeekRichmond, Virginia (August 20, 2007) -- It's not easy to rehabilitate from a serious injury or illness, nor is it easy to help patients who are working hard to reach their goals. That's why Sheltering Arms, a Richmond, Virginia-based rehabilitation healthcare provider, is going all out to celebrate National Rehabilitation Awareness Week. National Rehabilitation Awareness Week, held this year from September 16-22, seeks to highlight the contributions made by rehabilitation medicine as well as patients working to overcome physical disability. Governor Tim Kaine declared Virginia's participation by issuing a proclamation earlier this year. Sheltering Arms, which requested Governor Kaine's proclamation, is marking National Rehabilitation Awareness Week by holding multiple events during the week, including a unique healthcare expo. On average, Sheltering Arms works with more than 1,350 patients and employs more than 150 therapists at its nine facilities in Metro Richmond. "While there's no way for us to show enough admiration for our patients and therapists, the events during National Rehabilitation Awareness Week are designed to highlight the hard work and dedication required to recover from a debilitating injury or illness," said Sheltering Arms president and CEO James E. Sok. The celebration will start with a gala event on September 17 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Jefferson Hotel in downtown Richmond. The event is titled "A Celebration of the Power to Overcome". On the guest list are numerous community and public leaders who support Virginians with physical disabilities and the services that help them. The mistress of ceremonies for the evening will be 2007 Virginia Broadcaster of the Year May-Lily Lee from WCVE TV, Richmond's public television affiliate. Motivational speaker and comedian Brett Leake, who has muscular dystrophy, will entertain attendees. The event is a fundraiser for Club REC, a Sheltering Arms program dedicated to helping victims of stroke, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury maximize quality of life following therapy. The proceeds will subsidize Sheltering Arms' commitment to deliver services to all those in need, regardless of ability to pay. Throughout the week, Sheltering Arms will continue its mission of educating the healthcare community about rehabilitation techniques and technologies by hosting a number of educational forums for local medical professionals at its nine inpatient and outpatient facilities in the Richmond area. Wrapping up the weeklong celebration will be a fun and educational health fair held at the Science Museum of Virginia and the Children's Museum of Richmond on September 23 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The New Horizons in Healthcare Expo will be open to the public free of charge, and will include indoor and outdoor health-related exhibits that highlight its theme, "The Sky is the Limit!" Featured at the expo will be live music, food, free museum tickets in exchange for visiting vendors and exhibits, a hot air balloon, therapy dogs, a live horse used for therapeutic riding, and even a therapy monkey! "As the leading physical rehabilitation facility in the Richmond area, we have a responsibility to show what patients and therapists can do when dedication is combined with the latest technology," said Mr. Sok. "These events are designed to demonstrate both the high-tech advances in rehabilitation healthcare, and the 'people power' needed to make them effective." Members of the media are invited to attend both the gala event and the healthcare expo. Please call the contact number at the top of this release for more information.
