Talking Web Marketing in F’burg

I had a great time meeting a room full of business owners in Fredericksburg, Virginia last Thursday.  I was speaking as part of a Rappohannock Region SBDC entrepreneurship workshop series.  My portion of the discussion covered web marketing – specifically SEO, social networking, and social media.  This was the first of four workshop dates.  I’ll be speaking during the third date as well, which will be held on October 8.

Several attendees requested a copy of my slide presentation, so I’ve posted it here.  Thanks for inviting me!

Three Speaking Engagements in 30 Days

I’ve mentioned before that it seems like I’ll go a while without anyone asking me to present at a workshop or speak to a group, and then I’ll have several crop up in a short amount of time.  That’s being proven again.  My last speaking engagement was several months ago, but I’ll have three coming up in the next 30 days.

Here’s what I have coming up:

September 24, 2009: Present on using Social Media for marketing at a workshop organized by the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Fredericksburg area Small Business Development Center (SBDC).  The workshop will be from 8:30am until 10:30am at the Stafford (Virginia) Campus of the University of Mary Washington.

October 1, 2009: Present at a meeting of the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce about using social media, social networking, and SEO for web marketing.  The presentation will be from 3:30pm until 5:30pm (with a reception to follow) at the Village Bank headquarters in Midlothian, VA.

October 8, 2009: Present on how to market your website at another workshop organized by the SBA and Fredericksburg SBDC.  The workshop will be from 8:30am until 10:30am at the Stafford (Virginia) Campus of the University of Mary Washington.

Keep an eye on this blog and my Twitter stream, as I expect to have registration details in the next few days.

If you’re interested in having me speak to your group about public relations, social media, SEO, or any number of other topics, please contact me!

A Busy July for Speaking Opportunities

July is going to be a lot of fun, and despite my tendency toward sarcasm … I really mean that!  I’ve got a busy month coming up, with a number of speaking opportunities.  I’ve run down the list below, and will update it if anything else comes up.  It’s a full slate, particularly for what is supposed to be a slow summer month!

  • July 14: I’ll conduct a private workshop on using Facebook and Twitter at a local Realty firm
  • July 22: I’ll teach two classes on this day for the Richmond Association of REALTORS®. At 10am, I’ll teach Facebook for beginners.  At 1pm, I’ll repeat last month’s class on Facebook and Twitter for REALTORS®.  More information will be posted in the coming days at the RAR education site.
  • July 24: I’ll be manning a discussion table at the Strategic Leadership and Social Media for Social Good Conference at the University of Richmond’s Jepson School of Business.  The table topic will be podcasts and web videos.  The conference is for decision-makers in nonprofit and government organizations.  Registration information is available here.

Audio from July’s New Media Seminars

I’ve got a busy July coming up for speaking opportunities and even teaching.  I plan to cover that in a separate post, so that’s not important right now :)  In this post, I wanted to share some audio from my most recent presentation.

I spoke this week at the July edition of the monthly New Media Seminars, organized by Advertising and New Media firm Madison + Main.  I recorded my portion of the half-day workshop, and included it in the latest episode of my small business advice podcast, Startup BizCast.  My topic was “How Social Media Changed Everything in PR”.

You can listen in the player below, or find out how to subscribe via iTunes, RSS, or other podcast directories by visiting the Startup BizCast blog.

First Time Home Buyers and Social Networking

facebook-twitterI’ve been invited to teach an upcoming class entitled How to Attract First Time Home Buyers using Facebook & Twitter.  The class is presented by The Real Estate School (TRES), a service of the Richmond Association of REALTORS® (RAR).  RAR and TRES are clients of mine who do a great job representing and teaching real estate agents and brokers in Central Virginia.

The class will cover how REALTORS® can use Facebook and Twitter to find new clients, specifically those first time home buyers.  Social networking is showing immense growth among users who are more than 30 years old, but a large percentage of the users are still 20-somethings, an age group that is most likely to fall into that “first time home buyer” category.
