Let’s Never Forget, We’re the Real Story

With apologies to 1987′s Broadcast News (still one of the most accurate movie portrayals of a real broadcast newsroom), let’s never forget, we’re the real story here, not them.  CNBC’s Rick Santelli gave a great example of that line of thinking last week when he started ranting on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade.  The rant, which slammed President Obama’s efforts to stimulate the economy, has since gone viral.  Here’s a clip:

Facebook Bad for Your Health?

A psychologist in the U.K. says Facebook and other social networking sites are bad for your health:

Dr Aric Sigman says the amount of time we spend with each other has slumped dramatically and in turn is damaging our health.

He says our devotion to such sites could alter the way genes work, upset immune responses, hormone levels, and the function of arteries, and influence mental performance.

Levels of hormones such as the “cuddle chemical” oxytocin, which promotes bonding, altered according to whether people were in close contact or not.

This could increase the risk of health problems as serious as cancer, strokes, heart disease, and dementia.

Dr Sigman spells out his warning in the latest issue of Biologist, the journal of the Institute of Biology, and maintains that social networking sites have played a significant role in people becoming more isolated.

New Client Website Unveiled

I’m happy to announce another new EndGame PR client website! I’ve been doing quite a bit of work with the Richmond Association of REALTORS® (RAR).  In December, I finished building their REALTORStore Online site, which is a magazine style design with a LOT of content on the front page and an e-commerce solution to help them implement their concierge service.  This week I “handed over the keys” for that site’s sister!  The site for The Real Estate School (TRES) features a design very similar to the REALTORStore … so similar in fact that I started calling the two “fraternal twins”.

The new TRES website features the same large amount of content as REALTORStore Online, and the addition of a podcast listening station on the front page for the shows I’m producing for them.   With each site I not only designed and built the layout, but also assisted with the writing of the content.

Here’s a look at the new home of TRES on the day it launched:

I was very proud today in a meeting that client contacts couldn’t stop raving about how much better this site is than the one they had previously. That’s my goal!

Online Video Use Skyrocketing

This news is about a week old, and can now be removed from the “things I’ve been meaning to blog about” file.  According to comScore, December was a record-setting month for web video watching.  Despite the election being over (and all of the great SNL election web videos on NBC going stale), December’s video watching was up 13% over November, for a record total of 14.3 billion videos watched.    More details from Podcasting News

Happy Birthday Facebook

Happy Birthday to the hottest social media and social networking site on the planet!  Today is Facebook’s fifth birthday, and it’s absolutely shocking how far the site has come in those five years.  It wasn’t horribly long ago that (old) folks like me weren’t even allowed to sign up.  Now, I’m hearing regular stories from my contemporaries about being “friended” by a parent!

Facebook and its 150 million highly addicted users (a number that’s growing rapidly) have become such a part of our culture that it’s rare to get a gathering of people together where the site doesn’t come up in one way or another.  I was astounded recently at a post-Christmas party to hear Facebook mentioned at least 10 times among the 15 people or so in attendance.

Facebook is celebrating by offering special thank you cards (electronic cards, of course) to send to your friends on the site.  I’m getting ready to send a few out now.  They’ve also posted information on the Facebook official “page” (Facebook account required for that link).
