Willie -- You are correct. This review is out of date. Several of the distribution services have started new pricing plans for 2010, including OPN and Business Wire. I plan to write my third edition of this review as soon as I can find the time. Thanks for your comment!

Richard - $200 isn't much, I'll say. Keeping in mind that online release distribution isn't the best way to get media coverage, I'd normally say your best bets if you're hoping for media coverage are PR Newswire or Business Wire. However, you're not going to get a release from them for $200. Your next best bet is PRWeb. Their $140 distribution is pretty good. I'd do that, and then research some media outlets and email to reporters directly.

Good luck!

Steve,

Great site. Thanks for all the information.

I've done a lot of digging around, but am still quite uncertain of which way to go and who to work with.

My specific objective is to get publicity for a new product I am releasing (sports-related... particularly golf). The product is unique and the application has broad interest, so I think there is a good chance many sources would run a story on it. I'm not concerned about SEO right now. My budget is around $200 to start.

What do you suggest?

Thanks.

Hi Reese,

When you say "online news services", what do you mean specifically? If you mean blogs and news websites, I've actually had a bit of success getting some pickup by distributing on Business Wire. It's not guaranteed, however, and for me would fall into the "hit or miss" category.

The best way to work toward coverage on these sites is to contact them directly to let them know about your news.

Good luck!

PS - Not familiar with Send2Press, but I tend to be cautious with services that claim they can get you media coverage by sending releases to their "lists". Nothing replaces a personal email pitching a release to a reporter.

Steve,

Great review. I'm interested in getting the word out about speaking engagements and appearances one of our employees does, often abroad. The subject matter (and audiences) are all in the diamond and jewelry industry. While backlinks would be nice I'm more interested in spreading the news of these engagements in online news services. Any suggestions?

Steve,
Good point about using different services to distribute releases.

Thanks for the tip about my subscription link. It's working fine now. Must have been a temporary glitch at my web hosting company or email service provider.

Best,
Arun

Arun --

Thanks for the tip. I'm not fond of the "yearly subscription" model. I don't want to be locked into using only one site. In my opinion, it's better for marketing reasons and SEO reasons to use different sites.

Also, your order/subscribe page is broken.

Hi Rebekah--

Glad you found my blog useful!

To answer your first question -- I'd say all three of those would be useful for you.

To answer your second question -- there's nothing wrong with posting on multiple sites. However, you need to avoid violating Google's duplicate content rule. You'll find more about that HERE.

Please feel free to contact me if you need further help. Online news release distribution is a great marketing and SEO tool, and I'd be happy to consult with you to make sure you're doing it correctly.

Steve,

Thank you for the excellent list and the clarity of your analyses.

FYI, I recently came across the site prbuzz.com. They provide unlimited press release distribution for an annual subscription of $299.

Best wishes,
Arun

Hi Mr. Mullen,

I've been scouring the web for hours now for informed reviews on PR sites and your posts are a Godsend, seriously.

I work for a company that is looking for a distribution site that will give us a decent amount of exposure for our PRs without getting us locked into something too costly or beyond the scope of our needs. Right now I'm looking at PR.com, PRlog, and onlinePRnews. For a medium-sized Internet Service Provider interested in improving our ranking, but not necessarily our media exposure, do you think one of those would be a good fit?

Also, would you advise against submitting the same PR to more than one place? For example, if we signed up with PR.com, but still submitted free PRs with PRlog, would that do more harm than good? I'm pretty new to this and I haven't been able to find a direct answer to that question in all the places I've looked online.

Thank you so much for your time,

Hi Jay--

You're welcome.

1) I don't really know of any. Generally speaking, I don't recommend using niche services, because the broader services work just as well or better.

2) For the most part, inclusion in Google News has more to do with what site you're using than what your release is about. If a release distribution site is being indexed by Google News (not all of them are), then your release should end up there. I *have* been wondering whether PRLog's releases were being indexed anymore, as the last couple of mine haven't ended up on GN. I'm going to do some investigating and may have to update my review. The good news is that PRLog releases still rank quite well in Google search.

Hi Steve,
Just found your review and I'm really grateful for the info. Two questions:

1. Can you recommend any news distribution services that are targeted to book reviewers or targeted for book promotion in general?

2. You say prlog.com releases often get listed on Google News. I haven't had any luck through them, though my PRWeb release was listed in no time. Do you know what Google News looks for in a release?

thanks,
Jay

Hi Zakira,

I apologize for using the word "blast", as it does have some negative connotations. However, I think we can certainly agree that Newswise is a mass distribution service, and while I certainly believe that distribution services are valuable, I do stand by my recommendation that using them as your sole means of contacting the media is not wise.

I'd be happy to talk with you about your service. Feel free to email me next week, using the contact form on this site. This week is far too busy for an in-depth discussion. Perhaps we can set up some kind of meeting, since you're based nearby.
