WordPress Going Social

I have been a blogging machine lately, haven’t I?

Matt Mullenweg, the lead geek (it’s a title of respect, Matt, I swear) from WordPress, announced today that a social networking element is being developed for the blogging platform. He made the announcement on his personal blog. He didn’t give too many details other than these:

Some of you may remember when I wrote about Chickspeak, a WordPress MU-based social network. Andy Peatling, the fellow behind it, later decided to recreate the work he had done as an Open Source effort he called BuddyPress. And it was good.

Today I’m happy to announce that Andy has joined Automattic full-time and we’ll be taking the BuddyPress project under our wing. We will grow it and support it the same way we support WordPress, MU, bbPress, Akismet, and more.

Podcasting News did a good job of summing up what this means:

A year from now, you should have the option to have your site not just be a blog or a podcast, but an extensible social network, based on open standards.

It’s clear the folks at WordPress plan to continue their trek toward domination of the blog platform world.

On a side note, Matt has a new domain name.  He was photomatt.net, but is now ma.tt.  The “.tt” is the top level domain for Trinidad and Tobago.  Very cool.
