Get Better at Online News Release Distribution

I was just poking around the PRWeb website. If you’re a frequent reader here, you’ll know I’m a fan of their online news release distribution service. I knew the folks over there at PRWeb were increasing their offerings, and I just noticed a few of them. One very helpful service they have that I’d never seen before was free webinars to learn how to more effectively use the service. I realize this is a promotional tool for them, but I’m certain they’re also giving out some great information.

Coming up in the next couple of weeks they have several opportunities for webinars for both new users and advanced users. If you’ve been thinking of using online distribution, they have a course for new users. If you use online distribution frequently, they have a webinar for advanced users could teach you something new.

Check out the schedule here.

Small Business Week Contest Preview

I’m working up the final details of a contest on the EndGame PR Podcast Production flagship show, Startup BizCast. National Small Business Week is April 21-25 in the U.S., and to celebrate, I’m organizing the Startup BizCast Small Business Week Contest. I have several great prizes lined up already and I’m hoping to work out a couple more before next Wednesday, when I announce the final details and how to enter.

WordPress Going Social

I have been a blogging machine lately, haven’t I?

Matt Mullenweg, the lead geek (it’s a title of respect, Matt, I swear) from WordPress, announced today that a social networking element is being developed for the blogging platform. He made the announcement on his personal blog. He didn’t give too many details other than these:

Some of you may remember when I wrote about Chickspeak, a WordPress MU-based social network. Andy Peatling, the fellow behind it, later decided to recreate the work he had done as an Open Source effort he called BuddyPress. And it was good.

Today I’m happy to announce that Andy has joined Automattic full-time and we’ll be taking the BuddyPress project under our wing. We will grow it and support it the same way we support WordPress, MU, bbPress, Akismet, and more.

Podcasting News did a good job of summing up what this means:

A year from now, you should have the option to have your site not just be a blog or a podcast, but an extensible social network, based on open standards.

It’s clear the folks at WordPress plan to continue their trek toward domination of the blog platform world.

On a side note, Matt has a new domain name.  He was photomatt.net, but is now ma.tt.  The “.tt” is the top level domain for Trinidad and Tobago.  Very cool.

Zogby Poll has Big Impact on Media Relations and Social Media

A new Zogby poll came out late last week and it has serious ramifications for media relations practitioners and for those who create social media. Since I do both, I’m particularly interested. The research found the following:

  • The Internet is now the top source of news for 48% of Americans
  • Two-thirds (67%) say traditional journalists are “out of touch”
  • A large majority (86%) of Americans said websites are an important source of news

This should point out to all public relations professionals once and for all that we CANNOT ignore the web. If we push our client news only to traditional media, we’re missing a large portion of the client’s potential customers.

For producers of social media like podcasts, blogs, and news sites, this is extremely encouraging. It shows that the “open source” nature of online news is working.
